David Wojnarowicz/ Bob Riordan

Today would have been David Wojnarowicz's 51st birthday. His funeral in 1992 was the first political demonstration I took part in and began a ten year association with ACT UP New York.

Today is doubly poignant because I've just returned from the funeral of my friend Bob Riordan who 13 years after David also died of AIDS. Today would have been Bob's 54th birthday.

Bob's service reminds me that even as the victims of hurricane Katrina struggle to rebuild their lives that not long ago another natural disaster befell the American people, that another administration did nothing in it's wake, that many lives were lost and that those who lost their lives were poor or black or queer or in some other way deemed less important than business as usual or killing people abroad.

Somethings never change and something do and the choice is ours.

ACT UP! FIGHT BACK! FIGHT AIDS!

I'll post more Japanese singing entrees as I find them.

Summer Down Under
