It has been brought to our attention that some of our readers ( you know who you are) may not be familiar with Domo Kun.

Seeing that some one has recently queried "What up with that purple thing with the fangs?" ,we thought we'd bring everybody up to speed.

Domo (どーもくん, Dōmo-kun) is the mascot of Japan's NHK television station, appearing in several 30 second stop-motion sketches shown as station identification during shows. The name "Domo" was acquired during the second episode of his show in which a TV announcer said, "doumo, konnichiwa" (どうも、こんにちは, "doumo, konnichiwa"?), which is a formal greeting meaning something along the lines of, "Well, hello there!", or "Hello, Domo!", and thus is a convenient dajare. The kun suffix on "Domo-kun," the name used to describe the character in the Japanese versions, is a Japanese honorific often used with young males.

Domo's official website at NHK is http://www.domomode.com/ and a US based fan site can be found at http://www.domonation.com/. Below you can watch a reel of Domo shorts and fall in love with him all over again or for the first time as the case maybe and see just why he's the best thing to come out of Japan since yakatori.

And just for the record Domo is brown. Should Domo appear any other color than brown ( like purple) please adjust the color settings on your monitor.

Of Shopping and Singing Crabs

As we were walking in a huge Kyoto shopping arcade we fell victim to the intoxicating siren song of a giant plastic crab. In an atempt to lure customers many restaurants in Kyoto employ the talents of singing plastic food all of whom have childlike voices and big round eyes. I'll post more Japanese singing entrees as I find them.

Summer Down Under
