The exquisite corpse drinks the new wine

As many of you know one of my new loves these days is wine. And one of the wineries I'm loving a lot is Bonny Doon Vineyards in Santa Cruz, Ca. Their wines are well made, inexpensive with most under $20 and very drinkable.

Adding to an already sweet package is well...sweet packaging. Bonny Doon commissions artists and designers to do their labels which range from the elegant and whimsical to down right creepy.

The label at the left is my favorite. It's for their The Exquisite Corpse, 2004 Sauvignon Blanc. A terrific blend of 95.5% Sauvignon Blanc, 4.5% visionary, Verdelho, Orange Muscat, and Marsanne.

What's with that funky label?

What kind of name is Exquisite Corpse for a wine? In Paris, circa 1925, the Surrealists developed a parlor game as a method of tapping in to the collective unconscious. Played by several people, the game involved writing a phrase on a sheet of paper, folding it to conceal the first portion, and passing it on to the next player, only to be revealed in its entirety upon completion by the last participant. The first sentence reputed to have been produced by this model read, Le cadavre exquis boira le vin nouveau(The exquisite corpse drinks the new wine), leading to the name for both the game and this new wine, the Exquisite Corpse

Of Shopping and Singing Crabs

As we were walking in a huge Kyoto shopping arcade we fell victim to the intoxicating siren song of a giant plastic crab. In an atempt to lure customers many restaurants in Kyoto employ the talents of singing plastic food all of whom have childlike voices and big round eyes. I'll post more Japanese singing entrees as I find them.
